As soon as you arrive in Ella, you notice the difference. The air is cooler, the landscape is greener and the pace seems to slow down naturally. After busier places in Sri Lanka, Ella feels like somewhere you can properly land for a while. The village lies in the middle of the highlands and is surrounded by tea plantations, mountains and deep valleys. It is easy to understand why so many travellers end up staying longer than planned. Ella is compact, atmospheric and offers exactly the right mix of being active and slowing down.

A relaxed village in the mountains
Ella is a small, lively village in Sri Lanka’s green highlands. The centre mainly consists of one main street, with smaller side streets around it where you will find accommodations, restaurants and shops. Everything is within walking distance, so you do not need a strict schedule here. You can easily walk from your accommodation to a café, viewpoint or restaurant.
The atmosphere during the day
During the day, Ella feels especially active. Travellers leave early for hikes, waterfalls and viewpoints, while others take their time over breakfast or wander through the village. You see a mix of backpackers, couples and travellers who want to escape the heat in other parts of Sri Lanka for a while. Despite its popularity, the village still feels open and relaxed, with lots of greenery and space.
The atmosphere in the evening
In the evening, Ella really comes to life. People return from their day trips and sit down for dinner. Many restaurants have a cosy setting with lights, music and mountain views. The atmosphere is friendly and social without feeling too crowded. It is a lovely place to end the day with good food and a drink.
Everything within walking distance
One of the biggest advantages of Ella is that you can do almost everything on foot. Whether you want to go to a restaurant, the start of a walking route or a viewpoint, it is rarely far away. For places slightly outside the village, you can easily take a tuk-tuk. That combination of being compact and varied is what makes Ella such a great base.

Views that never get boring
What makes Ella truly special are the views. Wherever you look, you see green hills, valleys and mountains layered behind each other. Around the village, there are several viewpoints where you can simply stop and enjoy the scenery. We chose to stay just outside the centre, which meant we woke up with a view of the famous Nine Arch Bridge. That peace and panorama made our stay in Ella feel extra special. It is the kind of place where you keep sitting on your balcony, simply because the view never gets old.
Nine Arch Bridge: iconic, but still special
Nine Arch Bridge is without a doubt the most photographed spot in Ella. The stone bridge lies in the middle of the greenery, surrounded by tea plantations and jungle, and several times a day a slow train crosses it. Despite its popularity, this place still feels special, especially if you visit at the right time.

Walking to the bridge
From the centre of Ella, you can walk to Nine Arch Bridge in about half an hour. The route takes you along small paths, houses and natural surroundings, which makes the walk almost as enjoyable as the destination itself. Along the way, you pass several viewpoints where you can already see the bridge from a distance. Early morning is especially nice for this walk, when it is still quiet and cool.
Viewpoints around Nine Arch Bridge
There are several viewpoints around the bridge, both above it and at track level. Some viewpoints are directly along the walking route, while others are reached via small side paths. From these spots, you can see the bridge beautifully in the landscape and get a good idea of when the train is approaching. It is worth staying here for a while and waiting for the moment calmly.
The train crossing the bridge
The moment the train crosses Nine Arch Bridge remains impressive. You hear it coming from far away and then see it slowly curve into view, with travellers leaning out of the doors to take photos. We found it even more special because later we also travelled over this bridge by train ourselves. That made the experience feel complete and showed how important the railway is for this region.
Crowds and timing
Nine Arch Bridge is popular, especially around the middle of the day. If you go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, it is often quieter and the place feels much more relaxed. With a little patience, you will always find a quiet spot to enjoy the view.
Getting active in nature around Ella
Ella is one of the best places in Sri Lanka where nature and outdoor activities come together effortlessly. From the village, you can quickly find yourself in the mountains, between tea plantations, waterfalls and viewpoints. You do not need to be an experienced hiker to discover beautiful places here, because many highlights can easily be combined in half a day or a full day.

Lipton’s Seat: views over the tea fields
One of the best-known viewpoints in the region is Lipton’s Seat. This viewpoint sits at almost 1,900 metres above sea level and looks out over a huge part of the surrounding area. According to local stories, this was the place where Thomas Lipton decided where his tea plantations would be. The road there winds through green hills and tea fields, and the journey alone is worth it. Once you reach the top, especially on a clear day, you get an impressive panorama over Sri Lanka’s highlands.
Waterfalls around Ella
There are several waterfalls around Ella, some easy to reach and others requiring a little more adventure. One well-known waterfall is located directly along the road, which makes it simple to visit. Other waterfalls require following a path that may include rocks and uneven sections. That can make it a bit of a search, but the adventurous feel makes arriving even more rewarding. On warm days, it is lovely to cool off here or simply enjoy the nature around you.
Little Adam’s Peak: a short climb, big views
Little Adam’s Peak is one of the most popular hikes around Ella, and for good reason. The walk is relatively short and manageable, but the view from the top is impressive. From the summit, you look out over Ella Gap, green hills and, on clear days, far into the surrounding area. Especially at the end of the day, when the sun slowly starts to set, this is a beautiful place to pause and enjoy the moment.

Ella Rock for a bigger challenge
If you are looking for more of a challenge, the hike to Ella Rock is a great option. This route is longer and more demanding than Little Adam’s Peak, but along the way you pass several viewpoints and stretches of nature where you may barely see anyone. The route partly follows the railway track before continuing through hilly terrain. At the top, you are rewarded with a wide view that shows just how green and vast this region is.
The train journey as part of the adventure
The train is also part of the Ella experience, even though this activity mainly involves sitting back and enjoying the view. The train ride through the highlands is an experience in itself, passing tea fields, bridges and valleys. For many travellers, the moment the train crosses the famous Nine Arch Bridge is a highlight. This combination of walking, travelling and simply looking around is exactly what makes Ella so varied.
The green world of tea plantations
Around Ella, you see tea plantations everywhere, covering the hillsides. Women with baskets on their backs pick tea leaves here every day, creating a memorable sight. Visiting a tea factory is a nice addition to your stay. During a tour, you learn how tea is produced and why Sri Lanka is so well known for its tea. It is not an absolute must-do, but it is an interesting stop that fits the surroundings perfectly.
Slowing down after a full day
After an active day, Ella is also a place where you can easily relax. In the evening, everyone slowly heads back towards the centre for food and drinks. You will find both local Sri Lankan kitchens and places serving international dishes. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy-going. Some evenings, we did nothing more than have a good meal and then return early to our accommodation. Ella shows that doing nothing can sometimes be exactly what you need.
Practical tips for staying in Ella
Plan at least four nights in Ella, although staying longer is definitely not a bad idea. Start your activities early in the day to avoid the heat and crowds. Good walking shoes are very useful, especially if you plan to visit waterfalls or do hikes. In the village itself, you can do everything on foot, but for trips in the surrounding area, a tuk-tuk is convenient. Always bring enough water and do not overfill your days. Choose what you really want to do and enjoy those places properly. There is so much to experience in and around Ella that doing everything is simply not realistic.
