Nuwara Eliya is located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country and feels completely different from the rest of the country. While the coast is often warm and tropical, here it is fresh, green and much cooler. It is not without reason that Nuwara Eliya is often called Little England. You will find old colonial houses, tea plantations stretching as far as you can see and a slower pace that is perfect for taking a break from travelling.
Why Nuwara Eliya is so special
Nuwara Eliya sits at more than 1,800 metres above sea level, and you notice that straight away. The temperature is lower and the air feels fresher. The landscape is made up of hills, misty valleys and neatly planted tea fields. Everything looks green and well-kept, giving Nuwara Eliya a very distinctive character. It is a lovely place to stay for a few days during a Sri Lanka itinerary, especially if you enjoy nature and want to learn more about tea production.

British influences and history
Nuwara Eliya got its English appearance during the period when Sri Lanka was under British colonial rule. In the 19th century, British officials looked for a place with a cooler climate and found it in the highlands. They built country houses, golf courses and parks that strongly resembled England. Sports such as polo, cricket and golf also became popular here. You can still see these influences today in the architecture, gardens and even in some hotels. The combination of British traditions and the Sri Lankan landscape makes Nuwara Eliya a special place with a very unique atmosphere.
Tea fields and tea factories
A visit to Nuwara Eliya is not complete without seeing a tea factory. There are many in the surrounding area, and most can be visited. You learn about the entire process, from picking the leaves to drying and sorting the tea. Afterwards, you can usually taste the tea as well. The tea fields themselves are also beautiful to walk through. Especially in the morning, when mist still hangs between the hills, the views are impressive.
The centre of Nuwara Eliya
The centre is small and easy to explore. You will find a local market mainly selling fruit and vegetables, small shops and simple restaurants. Do not expect a busy city, but rather a quiet place where everything moves at an easy pace. Gregory Lake is located just outside the centre and is a popular place for a walk or to rent a small boat. It is not a must-see, but it is a nice spot to relax for a while.
Walking and nature around Nuwara Eliya
The area around Nuwara Eliya is perfect for walks. Horton Plains National Park is not far away and is known for World’s End, a cliff with a spectacular view. Go early, because later in the day the view can disappear behind the mist. You can also take beautiful walks around the city itself, past tea fields and small villages. Everything feels calm and authentic.

Practical tips for your visit
Because of its location in the mountains, the climate in Nuwara Eliya is much cooler than in the rest of Sri Lanka. During the day, it is often pleasant, but in the evening and early morning it can get genuinely chilly. Warm clothing is therefore very useful. Think of a sweater, cardigan or light jacket, especially if you want to go outside in the evening or leave early for a walk or excursion.
Taking the train to Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya is easy to reach by train, and the train journey is an experience in itself. Many travellers choose the route from Kandy or Ella. Along the way, you pass green tea fields, small villages, bridges and waterfalls. The landscape changes slowly, and the views remain impressive for almost the entire journey. If you get off at Nanu Oya station, you are almost there. From here, it is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk to Nuwara Eliya itself. This train journey is often considered one of the most beautiful in Sri Lanka and is absolutely worth adding to your route. Tip: here you can find our complete Sri Lanka itinerary.
