Unawatuna is located on the south coast of Sri Lanka and is a lovely place for many travellers to slow down during a round trip. For us, Unawatuna was mainly a base for exploring the surrounding area. The atmosphere is relaxed, the distances are short and it is perfectly located for trips to nearby beaches and towns. At the same time, it is also a place where you can easily unwind after a day out, for example at the beach or at your accommodation.

Unawatuna as a base on the south coast
Unawatuna is compact and easy to navigate. That is exactly what makes it such a pleasant place to stay for a few nights. Everything is relatively close together and you can quickly travel to other places along the south coast. This makes Unawatuna ideal if you do not want to keep packing and moving on, but still want to see plenty of the surrounding area.
What we liked is that Unawatuna itself is lively enough not to get bored, but calm enough to really work as a base. During the day, you can head out to Galle, Mirissa or a nearby beach, and in the evening you simply return to a familiar place. That brings a bit of calm to your trip, especially if you have already had several stops behind you.

Beach and atmosphere in Unawatuna
Unawatuna Beach is set in a sheltered bay, which gives it a different feel from some of the more open beaches on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Along the beach, you will find restaurants, beach bars and accommodation, so there is always something going on without it feeling too busy or overwhelming.
During the day, there is a relaxed holiday atmosphere, and later in the day many people sit down for a drink or dinner with a view of the sea. Unawatuna is clearly touristy, but not in an unpleasant way. It feels more like a place where many travellers are happy to stay for a few days.
I can understand why. The combination of beach, short distances, restaurants and a convenient location makes it an easy destination to include in your route.

Day trip to Mirissa
Mirissa is a short distance from Unawatuna, which makes it a very logical day trip if you are staying on this side of Sri Lanka. It is a popular coastal town with a relaxed atmosphere, nice beaches and a few well-known viewpoints. If you feel like a varied outing without spending too long on the road, Mirissa is a great choice.
One of the most famous places in Mirissa is Coconut Tree Hill. It is one of those viewpoints where many travellers stop for a moment to look out over the sea. It is especially nice early in the day or later in the afternoon. The light is softer then and it is often a little quieter than in the middle of the day.
Mirissa is also simply a nice place to walk around, have something to eat or spend a few hours at the beach. You do not need to create a full day schedule to enjoy it. That loose, easy-going character is exactly what makes Mirissa a good addition to a stay in Unawatuna.

Visiting Galle
One of the best trips from Unawatuna is without a doubt Galle. This coastal city is nearby and is best known for its historic fort. Because the distance is so short, you can visit Galle very easily without it feeling like a big journey. That makes it an ideal day trip if you want to combine culture, history and atmosphere.
Galle immediately feels different from most other places on the south coast. Inside the fort, you can clearly see European influences, and that is exactly what makes it special. It is a place where you can wander through the streets at a relaxed pace, step into a café and, in between, keep arriving at old walls, squares or viewpoints over the sea.

Galle Fort and Dutch influences
The heart of the city is Galle Fort, a former Dutch VOC fort where Dutch influences are still clearly visible. During a walk through the fort, you pass old buildings, churches, thick city walls and narrow streets that create a very different atmosphere from the rest of Sri Lanka.
That contrast is exactly what makes a visit to Galle so enjoyable. You notice much more clearly here that Galle is not just a coastal town, but also a historic place with several layers. Especially if you have already been travelling through Sri Lanka for a while, it is interesting to see this completely different side of the country.
Wandering through the fort
Within the walls of Galle Fort, you will find boutiques, cafés, small shops and a few museums. It is mainly a place to walk around slowly and take in the atmosphere. Do not expect a huge list of individual highlights that you have to tick off. The charm lies in simply wandering.
At the same time, you will notice that Galle Fort is popular with visitors. Especially in the middle of the day, it can get busy. That is why it is smart to go early or later in the afternoon. Not only is the temperature more pleasant then, but the atmosphere is also nicer for walking around.

Sea views and the city walls
A walk along the city walls is a lovely way to end your visit to Galle Fort. From here, you look out over the sea, the coastline and parts of the city. Especially later in the day, this is a beautiful place to linger for a while.
The light becomes softer, the temperature drops a little and the atmosphere is at its best. After that, you can easily travel back to Unawatuna, which shows exactly why this is such a convenient base on the south coast.

Practical tips for trips from Unawatuna
For trips from Unawatuna, a tuk-tuk is often the easiest option. The distances are short and transport is usually quick to arrange. This makes it easy to combine several places in one day without much hassle.
We found it useful to leave early, especially when visiting popular places or if the weather may play a role. In the morning, it is often quieter and not yet too hot. That makes it much more pleasant to walk around Galle Fort or visit a viewpoint in Mirissa.
Another advantage of Unawatuna is that you have many options without spending a long time on the road. You can have a beach day, add a cultural stop or combine several short outings. For a round trip, that is ideal, because it gives you flexibility without making your itinerary feel too full.

We stayed at Agnus Unawatuna ourselves and found it a very lovely place. The rooms are spacious, everything feels well maintained and the infinity pool is a big plus. After a day out, this is the kind of accommodation you are happy to return to. It is comfortable, quiet and just a little more stylish than average.

Agnus Unawatuna is a stylish place to stay with spacious rooms and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean. The infinity pool is definitely one of the big highlights here. Thaproban Pavilion Waves is a luxury resort directly by the sea. Here, everything revolves around relaxing with ocean views. Think of a beautiful pool, modern rooms and a stay that is clearly more focused on comfort and peace. If you want a more luxurious stay in Unawatuna, this is a strong option.
Why we would recommend Unawatuna
Unawatuna may not be the most untouched place on the south coast, but as a practical and pleasant base, we found it a very good choice. You are close to Galle, can easily visit Mirissa and still have the beach, restaurants and good accommodation nearby.
For travellers who do not want to rush constantly during a trip through Sri Lanka, but would rather stay in one place for a few days, Unawatuna works very well. Heading out during the day and returning in the evening to a relaxed place by the sea: that is exactly what made it so enjoyable for us.
