In the middle of a green landscape, a huge rock rises up and can be seen from far away. If you are travelling through Sri Lanka, there is a good chance Sigiriya will be on your route. The combination of nature, history and views makes Sigiriya a special stop during your trip. The village itself is small and easy to navigate, but the surrounding area offers plenty of variety. The world-famous Lion Rock towers high above the jungle here and is visible from far away. This impressive rock has a rich history and forms the centrepiece of the area. Sigiriya feels compact, but anything but boring. Nearby, you will find cave temples, green landscapes and special places to stay. It is a place where you can be active and see a lot at the same time.

A village surrounded by greenery
Sigiriya mainly consists of a quiet village with accommodation, restaurants and wide stretches of nature around it. You stay here between rice fields, palm trees and jungle. The atmosphere is open and relaxed, with little traffic and lots of space.
Everything is fairly close together, which makes it a pleasant place to stay for a few days. You wake up with views of greenery and often hear birds or monkeys in the distance. That immediately makes Sigiriya feel very different from larger cities.

Climbing Lion Rock
The best-known sight in Sigiriya is without a doubt Lion Rock, also called Sigiriya Rock. This iconic rock rises high above the jungle and can be climbed via a long staircase with around 1,200 steps. Along the way, you pass the remains of the palace that once stood here.
The climb is manageable, but it does take some energy, especially because of the heat and height. If you are afraid of heights, this is not the most ideal place, as some parts of the stairs are open and steep.
The entrance fee is quite high compared with other sights in Sri Lanka, but at the top you are rewarded with a view over the jungle that makes up for a lot. You can see how far the landscape stretches and why this place was once so strategic.
We recommend visiting Lion Rock early in the morning, when it is still cooler and less crowded.

Pidurangala Rock for sunrise views
Next to Lion Rock lies Pidurangala Rock, a popular spot for anyone who loves a good viewpoint. The climb is a little rougher, but shorter and more adventurous. From the top, you have a fantastic view of Lion Rock and the surrounding nature.
Sunrise is an especially magical moment here. The light slowly changes and the rock becomes more and more visible. Pidurangala is a beautiful addition to Lion Rock and shows Sigiriya from a different perspective.

Discovering the nature around Sigiriya
There is a lot to discover in nature around Sigiriya. You can go for walks through the greenery or take a bike ride past rice fields and small villages. Along the way, you often meet locals and get a glimpse of daily life in this area.
National parks are also not far away, so a safari is easy to combine with your stay. The area around Sigiriya feels varied and lively. What makes it even more special is that, with a bit of luck, you might suddenly spot an elephant along the road.
Elephant safari in Hurulu Eco Park
During our stay in Sigiriya, we took a jeep safari to Hurulu Eco Park, a quiet nature reserve close to the village. This park is a nice place to see wild elephants in their natural surroundings, without it immediately feeling too crowded.
We drove through green landscapes and open plains, spotting several elephants along the way, sometimes in small groups. Because Hurulu Eco Park often feels calmer than some of the other parks in the area, it is a lovely addition to the cultural sights around Sigiriya.
You see a completely different side of Sri Lanka here, and that variety makes a stay in Sigiriya even more enjoyable.
