Khao Lak was the first real rest stop during our Thailand trip. After the intensity of Bangkok, it felt wonderful to be somewhere much calmer. No packed schedule, no busy city, just beach, pool, good food and a chance to catch our breath. We stayed in Khao Lak for four days, and it was exactly what we needed at that point in the trip.
We travelled to Khao Lak after Bangkok and flew into Phuket. From there, Khao Lak is easy to reach and immediately feels like a completely different world. Where Bangkok can feel big, hot, busy and overwhelming, Khao Lak is relaxed and easy-going. The pace is slower, the beaches are wide and the atmosphere is much quieter than in many better-known places in southern Thailand.

Why Khao Lak is such a nice stop
Khao Lak is located on the west coast of Thailand, north of Phuket. It is not an island, but a coastal area with long beaches, resorts, restaurants and shops. Still, Khao Lak feels much calmer than places like Phuket, Krabi or Koh Phi Phi. That makes it a lovely destination if you need some downtime after a few intense days in Bangkok.
Within a Thailand itinerary, Khao Lak works especially well as a stop between the city and the islands. You start with culture, crowds and lots of impressions in Bangkok, then head south. Instead of immediately continuing to a busy beach destination, you can first slow down in Khao Lak.
We really liked that. Khao Lak is accessible, but not overwhelming. There are enough restaurants, shops and excursion options nearby, but it never feels like you are in the middle of the chaos. Especially in the low season, the atmosphere was very relaxed.
Staying at SENTIDO Khao Lak
We stayed at SENTIDO Khao Lak, and it matched exactly what we were looking for. A comfortable beachfront resort, a lovely pool and everything close enough so we did not constantly need transport. Especially after Bangkok, it was wonderful to simply stay here without feeling like we were missing out.
The resort is located directly on the beach and within walking distance of the central area of Khao Lak. That gives you two worlds in one place: quiet days by the sea and pool, and easy evenings out for dinner or a short walk past shops and restaurants.

What we liked about SENTIDO Khao Lak:
- The beachfront location is ideal for properly switching off.
- The pool is lovely and relaxed, especially in the low season.
- You can easily walk to nearby restaurants and shops.
- The resort feels comfortable without needing much planning.
- It is a great place to schedule a few quiet days after Bangkok.
For us, this was not a destination where we wanted to be out exploring every day. The resort was part of the experience. Beach in front, pool nearby, slow breakfast and then seeing what you feel like doing. Sometimes that is exactly the best way to start a trip.

Beach and pool: exactly what we needed
Our days in Khao Lak mainly revolved around the beach at the resort and the swimming pool. That may sound simple, but after the first busy days of the trip, it was perfect. You do not have to fill every destination with activities for it to be worthwhile. Khao Lak is exactly the kind of place where the value lies in the calm.
The beach near the resort was lovely for walking, looking out over the sea or simply lying down for a while. The beaches in Khao Lak are generally long and wide, so they do not quickly feel crowded. Especially in the low season, we had plenty of space.
The pool was also a big plus for us. It made the days very easy. Swim, read, have a drink, walk to the beach, go back again. That slow rhythm suited Khao Lak perfectly. If you are looking for spectacular sights around every corner, this may not be the destination that stays with you the most. But if you want to unwind, Khao Lak is very nice.
The main street in Khao Lak
Another thing we liked was the long street near the resort. In the evening, you can go out for dinner, do a little shopping and just walk around. It is not especially unique or trendy, but it is very easy and practical. There is just enough going on without it becoming busy or overwhelming.
You will find restaurants, small shops, massage salons, tour agencies and places to have a drink. That makes Khao Lak convenient. You do not have to eat at the resort every night, and there is enough choice without feeling like you are in a huge beach town.
We found the atmosphere very relaxed. No loud party music, no massive boulevard, just a calm holiday street where you can wander at your own pace. Especially if you have just come from Bangkok, that feels really nice.
Khao Lak in the low season
We visited Khao Lak in the low season. For us, that mainly meant it was quiet. That was actually a benefit, because we came here to rest. The resort felt relaxed, the beaches were not busy and the street near the hotel was lively enough without feeling crowded.
You do need to be prepared for more changeable weather in the low season. We had planned to go to Khao Sok, but our trip unfortunately could not go ahead because of a storm. That is part of travelling in this period. You may get lucky with sunshine and beautiful days, but you can also experience rain, rough seas or excursions that get cancelled.
That is why Khao Lak in the low season is especially nice if you travel flexibly. Do not create a schedule where everything depends on one specific tour or one day of good weather. Use Khao Lak as a calm base and see what is possible once you are there. If the weather is good, you can go out. If not, a comfortable resort by the beach is not exactly a punishment.

Day trip to Khao Sok from Khao Lak
One of the most popular trips from Khao Lak is Khao Sok National Park. This inland nature area is known for jungle, limestone cliffs, lakes and overnight stays on the water. It was also on our planning, but due to a storm, it unfortunately could not go ahead.
That was a shame, because Khao Sok seems like a beautiful addition if you want to combine nature with beach time. At the same time, it was a good reminder that in Thailand, especially during the rainy season, you need to stay flexible. Safety and weather conditions come first.
If you want to visit Khao Sok from Khao Lak, you can choose between a day trip or a multi-day tour. A day trip gives you an impression, but with an overnight stay you have more time and it will probably feel less rushed. If you travel in the low season, check shortly beforehand whether conditions are good.
An organised tour can be useful, because transport, guide and planning are arranged for you. Especially if you do not want to figure out transfers yourself, that is convenient. Always check carefully what is included and whether the tour suits your travel period.
Similan Islands: beautiful, but not in July
Khao Lak is a well-known base for tours to the Similan Islands. This island group is known for clear water, white beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities. But there is one important thing to know: in July, you cannot just visit them.
We travelled in July, and during that period the Similan Islands are closed to visitors. This has to do with the season, sea conditions and the protection of the national park. So it is not something you can simply arrange last-minute once you are there.
That is important to know in advance. Many travellers see photos of the Similan Islands and assume this is a standard excursion from Khao Lak, but that mainly applies during the right season. If you travel roughly between mid-October and mid-May, there is a better chance that tours are possible. If you travel during the European summer, you should remove this excursion from your planning.
What can you do in Khao Lak?
We kept our time in Khao Lak very relaxed, but there are enough things to do if you want to be a little more active. It is not a destination with a long list of must-sees, but it is a good base for nature, beach and easy outings.
Fun things to do in and around Khao Lak:
- Enjoy the beach: Khao Lak has long beaches that often feel calmer than beaches in better-known areas.
- Relax at your resort: especially if you choose a nice place to stay, this is truly part of the destination.
- Walk through the centre: the main street is convenient for restaurants, shops and a relaxed evening stroll.
- Visit Khao Sok National Park: beautiful for jungle and nature, but check the weather carefully in the low season.
- Plan the Similan Islands in the right season: a famous snorkelling and diving trip, but closed during the summer months.
- Visit waterfalls: there are several waterfalls in the area, especially interesting when there is enough water.
- Get a massage: ideal in a destination where relaxation is the main focus.
For us, Khao Lak did not need to be more active than this. After Bangkok, it was lovely to have very little to do. We mostly enjoyed the beach, the pool and the relaxed atmosphere.
How to get to Khao Lak
The most logical airport for Khao Lak is Phuket Airport. From there, you can continue to Khao Lak by transfer, taxi, minivan or bus. The route is easy to manage, which makes Khao Lak a practical first beach stop after Bangkok.
A private transfer is the easiest option, especially if you are travelling with luggage or do not feel like figuring things out after a flight. A shared minivan or bus can be cheaper, but often takes a bit more time and flexibility. What you choose mainly depends on your budget and energy level.

From Khao Lak to Krabi
After Khao Lak, we travelled on to Krabi. This is a logical next stop if you are following Thailand’s west coast. Krabi is busier, more touristy and practical as a base for Railay Beach and onward travel to islands such as Koh Lanta.
You can travel from Khao Lak to Krabi by minivan, bus or private transfer. A private transfer is more comfortable and faster, but also more expensive. With a minivan, you travel more affordably, but you depend more on pickup times and possible stops along the way.
How many days do you need in Khao Lak?
We stayed in Khao Lak for four days and were very happy with that. Especially because we had just come from Bangkok, it was nice not to have to move on again after only one or two nights. Four days gives you enough space to relax, spend time on the beach, eat out a few times and possibly take a day trip.
If you have less time, I would recommend staying at least three nights. Otherwise, it can quickly feel like you are only arriving and leaving again. If you also want to visit Khao Sok or go to the Similan Islands in the right season, it is better to stay four to five nights.
Who is Khao Lak best for?
Khao Lak is especially suitable for travellers looking for peace and quiet. It is not a destination for those who want lots of nightlife, busy beach clubs or a huge list of sights. Khao Lak is too relaxed for that.
Khao Lak is a good fit if you:
- want to recover after Bangkok;
- are looking for a calmer beach destination than Phuket or Krabi;
- like staying in a comfortable resort by the sea;
- care about beach and pool time;
- still want restaurants and shops within walking distance;
- want to add Khao Sok or the Similan Islands in the right season.
For us, Khao Lak was mainly the place where we could properly land. Not too many impressions, but enough comfort. That made it a lovely start to the southern part of our trip.
